Length is the school’s published credit count, in the units it uses, so semester and quarter schools are not exactly comparable. Costs are each school’s own published figures, with the date and what they include. A calculated total is the school’s per-credit rate times its published credits. They are not directly comparable across schools, so open a school’s cost sources before relying on a number.

Each state links to its licensing page, so you can check what the license requires before choosing a program there.

Use the list to narrow the field, not to choose on accreditation alone.

After confirming accreditation, compare the questions that materially affect the next three to five years.

  1. Confirm the exact degree and campus

Open the accreditation record and find the program you want at the campus you would attend. Accreditation can cover a whole institution or only some programs inside it.

  2. Start from the state where you will practice

Licensure is set state by state and can include education, examination and certification requirements. Read the licensing guide by state before you compare schools.

  3. Ask for the total cost, in writing

Published figures differ in what they include (tuition only, fees, books) and in the year they apply to. Ask each school for the full program cost and what financial aid it takes part in.

  4. Compare time and clinical training

Credits are counted in each school’s own units. Ask for expected completion time, supervised clinical hours, patient volume and the styles of medicine taught.

  5. Check herbal medicine and attendance

Find out whether Chinese herbal medicine is included, optional or a separate certificate, and how much attendance is required in person even when some courses are online.

  6. Ask about outcomes

Ask for recent completion rates, board-exam results and where graduates practice, with the definition and year behind each number.

Frequently asked

Choosing an acupuncture school, questions answered.

How many accredited acupuncture schools are there in the United States?

44 institutions in 21 states were in ACAHM’s accredited and pre-accredited directory when Goji checked it on October 12, 2026. Some institutions have several campuses or accredited programs, so institution, location and program totals are different.

Which state has the most acupuncture schools?

California, with 11 institutions that have a campus there. A school with campuses in several states counts once in each, so the state counts add up to more than 44.

How much does an acupuncture master’s degree cost?

Among the schools that publish or allow us to calculate a program total, the median is $62,292 for an acupuncture-only master’s (23 programs, $21,900 to $88,960) and $70,259 for a master’s that includes Chinese herbal medicine (33 programs, $53,745 to $121,625). Some figures are tuition only and others include fees or books, so use them as a rough guide and open each school’s cost source.

How long does acupuncture school take?

The directory records published credits, not calendar time. Entry-level master’s programs list 107 to 182 credits, in each school’s own units, so semester and quarter schools are not directly comparable. Ask each school for its expected completion time for full-time and part-time students.

Do these programs include Chinese herbal medicine?

40 of the 44 institutions list an accredited Chinese herbal medicine program, and 4 list acupuncture only. Herbal education can be built into the master’s, offered as a certificate, or not offered, so check the exact program and what your target state’s license allows you to do with herbs.

Does appearing here mean every program at the school is accredited?

No. ACAHM may accredit an entire specialized institution or only particular acupuncture and herbal-medicine programs inside a larger institution. Open the linked accreditation record and confirm the exact program before enrolling.

Does an accredited program qualify me for a license in every state?

Not automatically. Licensure is state-specific and can include education, examination, certification and other requirements. Check the state where you plan to practice before choosing a program.

Are online acupuncture programs included?

The directory identifies schools whose accredited programs may offer some distance-education courses, but ACAHM says entry-level programs leading to licensure remain residential in nature. Ask the school which parts require in-person attendance.

Are any of these schools under an ACAHM warning or probation?

When checked, 3 institutions carried an ACAHM notice: Arizona School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (Warning); California University - Silicon Valley (Probation); Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine (Probation). Status can change between reviews, so read the school’s accreditation record for the current action and its reasons.
