Card reader payments

Send the amount to a paired Square reader so the patient taps or inserts their own card.

Tactile editorial artwork for Square Reader

A patient finishes a session and holds out a card. Instead of typing sixteen digits from their hands into a form, you send the amount to the reader on your desk and they tap or insert the card themselves. Goji never sees the card number; it goes from the card to Square.

Pairing a reader once

Under Settings → Billing → Payment processing, Terminal readers has a Pair a reader button. Name the reader, for example Front desk, and Goji shows a code to enter on the device. The page waits and adds the reader to its list when the device connects. Only an owner or admin can pair a reader or forget one, and Square has to be connected with a default location first.

Charging on the reader

  • On an issued invoice, open the Collect payment menu and choose Charge on reader.
  • The amount starts as the balance still owed. Change it for a part payment, or leave it.
  • Pick the reader. If you only have one, it is chosen for you.
  • Choose Send to reader. Goji shows Waiting for payment on the reader while the patient pays.

When the charge succeeds the invoice updates itself, the same as a manually recorded payment. If the patient walks away or you picked the wrong invoice, Cancel pulls the charge back off the reader. A canceled checkout shows a message and nothing is recorded. A draft or voided invoice can't be charged.

Why bother

A reader charge is billed at Square's card-present rate, which is lower than a card typed in by hand. If you take cards in person, that adds up. Charges to a card on file are a separate path; see card on file. Without a paired reader, the menu tells you where to pair one.

Pair once, then charge.

Try it in your own practice.
