ICD-10 code questions, answered.
Why does a superbill need a diagnosis code?
The diagnosis code tells the plan why the visit happened. A superbill without one is a common reason a plan sends it back. Patients submit the superbill themselves, so the codes need to be on it before it leaves your office.
Is this list complete?
No. It is a short starter list of common, long-stable codes, favoring general variants over site-specific ones. ICD-10-CM is revised every year and has thousands of codes, so use this as a starting point and confirm each code with your own billing resources.
Which code should I pick when more than one fits?
Pick the one that matches what you actually recorded for the patient. If laterality or site is documented, use the specific code, such as right or left shoulder. If it is not, use the unspecified code rather than guessing. Which diagnoses a plan covers for acupuncture is the plan’s decision.
Are these the codes I must use?
No. Diagnosis is a clinical judgment, and the practitioner who saw the patient chooses it. The list only saves you from looking up the same codes repeatedly.
Does Goji use this list?
Yes. It is the default list every practice starts with in Goji, where you can remove codes and add your own under Settings, Billing. A visit’s superbill then offers the codes you kept.
Rather not look codes up each visit?
Goji suggests diagnosis codes from your own list and puts them on the superbill for you. Start free and see one.
