Currency and tax

Set your currency, and a tax rate only if you charge one.

Tactile editorial artwork for Currency And Tax

A practice in Ontario needs the line to say HST. One in Vancouver needs GST. A practice in Texas that sells herbs needs sales tax on the herbs and nothing on the needling. Invoice settings cover all three, and a practice that charges no tax never sees a tax line.

Rate, scope and label.

Where to set it

Under Settings → Billing, once invoicing is on, the Currency & tax section has four fields:

  • Currency: USD, CAD, EUR, GBP or AUD.
  • Tax rate: a percentage between 0 and 100, like 8.25. Leave it blank if you don’t charge tax, which is the usual case for acupuncture visits.
  • What it’s called: the word printed on the invoice, such as Tax, GST, HST or VAT.
  • What it applies to: Retail products only, or Everything, services included.

How it applies

Tax is worked out line by line from your rate, never typed in by the person creating the invoice. With Retail products only, an invoice that mixes a treatment and a bottle of herbs taxes just the herbs. Tax is recalculated whenever an invoice’s lines are created or edited, so changing a price keeps the tax right. Drafts that Goji prepares when you complete a chart (see automatic invoice drafts) are created without tax, so if you tax services too, edit the draft before you issue it. The tax line only prints on the PDF when there is tax to show.

Changes apply from here on. An invoice keeps the currency it was created with, so changing yours never relabels what a patient already paid, and invoicing one patient in a different currency from the rest of your practice isn’t supported.

Try it in your own practice.
