Patients manage their cards

Patients save, update or remove their own cards from the portal.

A patient who just changed banks doesn't need to call the front desk to swap the card you have on file. They sign in to their portal, open their appointments page, and do it themselves.

Where it lives

The Saved payment methods section sits at the bottom of the patient's appointments page, below their invoices and payments. Add a card opens the same Square card form staff use, with wording written for the patient.

What a patient can do

  • Save a card and choose, with checkboxes, what it may be used for: selecting it themselves to pay a bill online, and letting the practice charge it without them taking action.
  • Make a saved card the default.
  • Edit permissions on a card they already saved, after typing their name to confirm.
  • Remove a card. The portal asks first, and warns that it can no longer be charged or selected.

Each card shows its expiry, with Expiring soon and Expired badges, and spells out what it is currently allowed for, such as card expired instead of a silent grey-out.

Paying a bill with a saved card

On an issued invoice, Pay now lists the patient's saved cards that they allowed to be selected, with the default preselected, plus a Use a new card option. Choosing a saved card means one click, not retyping sixteen digits. See pay now in the portal.

What stays with the practice

Editing a card's permissions can't grant or revoke a no-show-fee authorization. If a card already has one, the form says so and tells the patient to contact the practice. Staff see and manage the same cards on the patient's Billing page; see card on file and no-show fees.

Their cards, their permissions.

Try it in your own practice.
